Not All Burgers Are Created Equal

Coming soon to our town is a new outlet for "the perfect cheeseburger." Well, Renee and I have never had a "perfect" anything to eat so we had to get a preview by going to Austin for our first Hat Creek burgers. I enjoyed a traditional burger and Renee had a turkey burger. On a scale of 1 to 10 we both agreed our food scored near the top and definitely worth repeat visits. Here's what Hat Creek Burger Co. says about it's product. "(We) were founded on the idea of the perfect cheeseburger. We make each burger authentic to the core with all natural Premium Gold Black Angus beef. Known for its tenderness and flavor, Black Angus beef is used by all the finest steak houses throughout the country. Our beef is ALL NATURAL, meaning no anti- biotics and no hormones are ever used! We hand-form our patties daily, something you won't find at other burger stands. Did we mention the only freezer you'll find on site is for the Blue Bell Ice Cream? With super fresh produce, hand-cut fries, Blue Bell milkshakes, and everyone's favorite crushed ice, Hat Creek Burger Co. is truly"one of the greats!" We also enjoyed the clean atmosphere of the restaurant and the friendliness of the staff. Georgetown has lots of outlets for burgers but I am convinced that Hat Creek will be a hit. I will be writing a follow up blog when they open in a few months. -gene

Most Announced Day Of The Year! Coming Up This Sunday

Every day in May so far I have emails from up to three floral companies reminding me that May 12th is Mothers' Day! There is no way I could forget and if I act Now I can get the most beautiful blooms ever for only ___, plus free shipping, but I must act Now and use the special code found only on this offer. I'm playing their game but am waiting for tomorrow's "last minute" deal. I'm sure it will beat anything yet. Oh, and these flowers are specially arranged in a handsome glass vase that is Mom's to keep. No sir, this offer doesn't come in a brown box with work to be done. They'll make you a hero! Seriously now, it is a Special day since everyone has/had a mother so whether we celebrate with Mom in person or have fond memories of the "good old days" made so by our late Mom, we should celebrate. We will enjoy the weekend with Renee's daughter, Morgan, her husband and three kids, living their "good old days" and the loving events for future memories. Whatever you're doing Sunday, take time to Celebrate Mom! With or without those flowers.

Record-setting Fest Crowd Enjoying A Great Central Texas Weekend

Everyone finds something to enjoy at the Red Poppy Festival in downtown Georgetown, Texas. Friday evening through Sunday afternoon there's a long list of happenings to keep every age member of the family entertained. This annual event kicks off the year-long social scene in Georgetown and everyone participates. There's food of every description from waffle cones to kettlekorn and bbq brisket to cheeseburgers with lots to drink too. A basketball tourney to facepainting and tons of arts and crafts for sale. Antique and classic cars and pets to show off. And if you enjoy people-watching, this is the place for you.

A perfect Spring day with lots of sun and a cool breeze brings out the crowd. On Friday and Saturday nights there's free live entertainment followed by a full day of nonstop bands. Saturday morning gets going with a well-attended mile-long parade. Oh yes, our policemen, firemen, EMS and soldiers from Fort Hood are here in numbers.

Finally, as Georgetown is known as the Red Poppy Capital of Texas, we are especially excited when the poppies are blooming and this year they didn't disappoint. This is trully a great event for all to enjoy!-Gene

A Bite From Growing Georgetown Cuisine Scene

We experienced a real treat this noon at one of Georgetown's newest eateries, Wasabi, Japanese and Chinese Cuisine. Three of us shared Kung Pao Chicken, Kung Pao Shrimp and Beef Fried Rice off the Lunch menu. Each meal came with soup and since it was a first experience we each ordered a different flavor. All were tasty and a flavorful lead-in to our entrees. We like hot spice, thus our meal selections. A generous serving of each dish filled all of us and we took plenty home in a box. Wasabi is a definite repeat for us. A Big Thumbs Up! While we stuck to items we were familiar with for our first visit we will definitely try more venturesome items including delicious things from a vast sushi offering. We have made sushi an evening event. No special reason but to us sushi goes better with something other than iced tea and with more time to savor the special spice blends of Eastern cuisine. -Gene

Mustard Cabbage Bullies Wildflowers

The mild winter has been great for wildflower growth as well as its nasty enemy, Bastard Cabbage. It is spreading along roadsides and fields with its dainty yellow flowers. They can grow taller than waist high. It is robbing the bluebonnets and other wildflowers of sun and soil nutrients. The bluebonnets seedlings that manage to take hold of the soil in the fall may reach 12 to 18 inches tall, but the bluebonnet is no match for this lion.Bastard cabbage, also known as turnip weed, is troublesome in Central Texas. This invasive weed takes hold of disturbed or cultivated lands but experts fear its growth in natural areas as well.Contaminated grass seed mixes may be to blame for its introduction in Texas. To make mattes worse, one seed can germinate quickly, while others can lie in wait, perhaps for years, says Mark Simmons, Ecosystem Design Group director at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin. He says the dramatic display this year is due to drought, followed by a warm, wet winter. To help prevent greater populations, herbicides can be effective, but they also kill wildflowers and have no impact on seeds that are already in the ground. Bastard cabbage also builds resistance to the chemicals. The wildflower center recommends pulling the plant, roots and all, whenever possible. It is recommended that where the bastard cabbage has been manually or chemically removed in the spring or summer, then you need over-sowing with natives in the fall. The earlier we catch it, the better, says Simmons.

Great Wonders of The 21st Century

I got caught yesterday in the horns of a delima; the Masters Tournament from Augusta National was the event of the afternoon but, we needed to get on the road to get back home today in time to get some important work done.

My iphone was all I had in the car and CBS Sports updates of the leaderboard every 15 minutes was cause to squirm. So, I got bold and began to surf my options on the desktop menu only to find that last year I downloaded a free app of the Masters. Oh, in case you think my head was into the day's events too much, I did ask my wife to drive while I played.

Good news! The Masters app had a few-second delayed video stream of live play. Yes, I got to see the shot of the year from the pine straw deep in the woods to within 8 feet of the pin that would be the miracle win for a young man with an amazing life story. A story that really profiles that shot. A life deep in the woods of professional golf.

Everyone thought of this young 33-year old as an enigma to the serious personality of the sport, certainly at a shrine such as The Masters.

Today we can all celebrate in one more of life's great stories. Okay, go ahead and shed a tear. He did. More than one. Folks with no interest in golf at all saw and read about a human interest story that won't go away anytime soon and relished with those of us who love the game, it's heros and it's challenges. -Gene
